When to Ski the Dolomites: Month by Month, December to April

Har Tayarut editorial team · Updated October 18, 2026

How much snow there really is each month, when the days are shortest and the slopes busiest, what happens to the snow in March, how to read a snow report, and why everyone gets up early in the final week.

When to Ski the Dolomites: Month by Month, December to April

For the best snow, head to the Dolomites in January and February; for sunshine and warmth, in March; for quiet and value, in December and mid-January; and with small children or a sensitivity to cold, in late March. The Val di Fassa–Carezza area opens its season on 4 December 2026 and closes on 4 April 2027, precisely the dates of our first and last departures. The hotel sits at around 1,550 metres, the slopes reach up to about 2,950, and that difference is almost ten degrees: what falls as rain in the village is snow at the summit. Here are the figures, month by month.

In short:

  • December: quiet (until Christmas), thin snow lower down, short days, Hanukkah
  • January: the cold and the dry snow; after 6 January, the quietest of the season
  • February: the most snow, and the busiest (Carnival, European holidays)
  • March: sunshine, spring snow, 8–24 March quiet
  • 28.3–4.4: the final week, upper slopes good, lower ones thin

December

Average snow depth at the upper stations is around 80 centimetres and at the base of the mountain around 30, roughly two-thirds of what you'll find in January. Across the Dolomiti Superski network, almost every slope is covered by snow cannons (6,500 cannons, 200 water reservoirs), so the main slopes stay open even in a low-snow season; the lower slopes, which run back down to the village, are the first to thin out. The light: the shortest days of the year, sunrise a little before eight and sunset before half past four, and behind the cliffs the valley darkens earlier still. Skiing runs from nine until half past three. The crowds: very quiet until Christmas; from 23 December to 6 January, all of Italy is on holiday. And the week of Hanukkah is the first week of the season, with a programme for children.

January

About 50 centimetres of fresh snow on average at Belvedere, with the depth up top reaching around 130. The snow is dry and light and stays that way because the sun sits low. January is the coldest month, averaging around minus eight in the village, nights of minus ten and below, and minus fifteen on the summits on a windy day. This is the month when good gloves prove their worth. Right after 6 January the slopes empty out, and the three weeks of mid-January are among the quietest of the season. Who it's for: skiers who want quality snow and empty slopes and aren't afraid of the cold.

February

The snowiest month, with around 60 centimetres of fresh snow, and the first week of February is statistically the snowiest week of the year. The depth up top is at its peak. It's also the busiest month: the Italian Carnival holiday around 8–9 February, the Bavarians 8–12, the Dutch and British in the second half of the month. Longer queues, everything full. Who it's for: those who want the best conditions and are willing to share them, and families for whom this is the only month that works.

March

The depth up top is still around 130 centimetres, as in February, but the snow changes: the spring snow cycle begins. At night the slope freezes, in the morning it's hard and fast, towards eleven it softens into a thin, pleasant layer skiers call "corn snow," and after two it turns heavy and wet. The rule: get up early, ski hard until midday, and spend the afternoon by the pool. By mid-March the day is already two hours longer than in December, the sun is warm and the terraces fill up. After Carnival and before Easter (28 March 2027), roughly 8 to 24 March, is the season's second quiet window. Who it's for: families with small children, anyone who feels the cold, and those who love to sit in the sun after skiing. For many, the most pleasant weeks of all.

Early April

Our final week, 28 March to 4 April, is also the area's last week. The upper slopes are in good shape, the lower ones thin, the crowds sparse, and there's an end-of-season atmosphere. For those who want to keep going high up: the Marmolada is open until 18 April. And after Passover there's La Plagne, higher still and closing only at the end of April.

How do you read a snow report?

The Canazei snow report publishes the numbers every day. Snow depth at the summit / at the base: how much snow lies on the ground at the upper station and in the village; the upper figure matters for skiing, the lower one tells you whether the run back to the hotel is open. In Canazei this is a measurement taken by an observer from the Trento provincial meteorological service, not a forecast. Fresh snow over 24 hours: 20 centimetres is a big day. Lifts open X out of Y: at the start and end of the season not everything is open. Avalanche danger level 1–5: this concerns only those venturing off the marked slopes; on the groomed runs it has no bearing, and level 3 isn't "moderate" but twice as dangerous as level 2.

Sun, altitude and water, every month

For every thousand metres, radiation rises by about ten percent, and fresh snow reflects up to eighty percent of it. At Belvedere's altitude you can get sunburnt even in January, even just sitting on the terrace. And in the cold, dry air you lose far more fluid than you realise and don't feel thirsty: drink by the clock, and that also prevents the mild headache of the first evening. What to wear each month, and what to do on a snowy day.

When is the best time to ski the Dolomites?

For the best snow, January and February; for sunshine and warmth, March; for quiet, after 6 January or between 8 and 24 March. The Val di Fassa season: 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027.

Is there snow in the Dolomites in December?

Yes, usually around 80 centimetres at the upper stations, and almost every slope is covered by snow cannons too. The lower slopes down to the village are the thinnest, and these are the shortest days of the year.

What is the snow like in March in the Dolomites?

A depth similar to February, around 130 centimetres up top, but it's spring snow: hard in the morning, pleasant towards midday, heavy and wet after two. Get up early and ski until midday.
